You can split any spend transaction in Moss—whether it’s a card transaction, an invoice, or an employee reimbursement—using our manual splitting experience. This provides greater flexibility and visibility when allocating costs across accounting dimensions like VAT rate, expense accounts and cost centres.
Transactions can be split:
Manually
By VAT rate
By line item

When to use manual split
Manual splitting is useful when:
Accounting for multiple VAT rates on a receipt/invoice
Allocating different elements of a transaction to different expense accounts e.g. invoice with a tip/delivery
Costs need to be assigned to different departments or cost centres
Apportioning costs on an invoice by percentage
Accounting for quantity and unit price
How to split a transaction manually
Open a transaction from your Moss dashboard.
Click “Split transaction” and select “Manual split.”
In the setup view, choose the accounting dimensions you want to split by. You can still add/edit how a transaction is split before it has been approved.
Examples include: VAT rate, Expense Account, Cost Centre, Booking Text, Quantity, and Unit Price
VAT rate is selected by default.
Click “Apply” to open the split table.
Entering split details
Enter the amount for each line.
Based on your input, Moss will automatically calculate VAT and net/gross values.
Add more rows using + Add line, or use the row menu to duplicate or delete lines.
Apply values across rows and columns with bulk edit. Simply check the box that selects all and start editing.
Use Full Screen Mode to expand the table and reduce scrolling.
Understanding the totals
As you complete the split:
Moss shows real-time net, VAT, and gross totals for each line
The transaction summary widget compares your split total to the original invoice amount
If totals match, a green check mark confirms the values are aligned
Saving your split
Once the split is complete and validated:
Review the invoice preview if needed (zoom and resizing supported)
Moss saves any splits you make automatically so that you can come back to it later if needed.
The transaction is now ready for approval or export
