How to split expenses in the Moss mobile app

Written by Rosanna Howard

This feature is currently in early access. Please contact your CSM or customer support to enable it for your Moss account.

Some purchases contain items that need to be recorded differently. For example, items on the same receipt may have different VAT rates or belong to different cost centres.

You can easily split expenses on the web app or the mobile app. Splitting expenses divides one transaction into separate lines, allowing you to add the correct accounting details for each part of the purchase.

When to use splits

Splitting expenses is useful when:

  • Different parts of a transaction must be coded to separate accounts, for example, delivery and product.

  • Spend must be apportioned across departments, cost centres, or projects.

  • You want to split a total by percentage.

  • You need to record quantities and unit prices for accounting accuracy.

Example

You spent €120.55 at a supermarket. Of this amount:

  • €78.00 has a 20% VAT rate.

  • €42.55 has a 5% VAT rate.

You can split the transaction into two lines so that each amount has the correct VAT rate.

Note: Any Moss user can use the Moss mobile app on their phone. Learn how to start using the Moss mobile app here.

How it works

  • Upload the receipt

    • Open the transaction and upload its receipt. Then scroll to "Accounting details".

  • Complete the details that apply to the whole purchase.

    • Select any accounting values that are the same for the entire transaction.

    • You will not need to enter these values again for every split line.

  • Choose what you want to split

    • Tap “Split transaction”. Select the fields that differ between parts of the purchase, then tap “Continue”.

  • Review the receipt

    • The split screen shows the transaction total and the attached receipt. Tap the receipt to enlarge it and check the amounts if needed.

  • Complete the first line

    • Enter the amount for the first part of the purchase and select the corresponding accounting values.

  • Add the remaining lines

    • Tap “Add line” and complete the details for the next part of the purchase.

    • Repeat this step if you need to create additional lines.

    • The “Difference” at the bottom of the screen shows how much of the transaction still needs to be assigned. You can tap “Fill remaining” to add this amount to the latest line automatically.

  • Check and save the split

    • Before saving, make sure the “Difference” is equal to 0. This confirms that the split lines add up to the original transaction total.

    • Tap “Save split” to finish.

Note: The accounting fields available to you depend on your company’s settings. If you are unsure which values to select, contact your Finance team.
