What is a ZUGFeRD invoice?
A ZUGFeRD invoice is a hybrid electronic invoice format that combines:
A human-readable PDF for manual review
A machine-readable XML for automated processing
How Moss extracts data from ZUGFeRD invoices
When a ZUGFeRD invoice is uploaded to Moss, our system extracts key details from the embedded XML file to populate fields in the invoice side panel. These fields include: invoice number, amount, currency, due date, and delivery date.
Fields sourced from the XML are marked with a blue </> symbol, indicating that the values come from the structured data, not the PDF.
If there is a discrepancy between the XML and the PDF content, the extracted values may not match the information visible in the PDF document.
Why can the PDF and XML data differ?
Differences between the PDF and XML versions of a ZUGFeRD invoice can occur due to:
Data formatting inconsistencies
Errors in invoice generation or export
Misalignment between the two formats during processing
Since Moss relies on the XML for auto-populated fields, any inconsistencies between the two formats may result in discrepancies in the displayed invoice data.
Recommended actions
If you notice a difference between the PDF and XML data in a ZUGFeRD invoice, we recommend contacting your supplier and requesting a revised invoice to ensure consistency.
